Miami Hurricane Echinophyllia Fragfarmers Colony. This image of Fragfarmers
original colony section was taken a few |
Reeffarmers acquired our seed fragment of the Miami Hurricane from Eric of the old Fragfarmers shop. Eric decided on naming this coral Miami Hurricane due to the Green and Orange coloration, which is similar to the colors for the Miami Hurricanes. This is the same coral as the Limited Edition Pumpkin Patch coral that Reeffarmers also distributes. We recieved our first fragment of the Miami Hurricane coral from Eric and then later recieved a fragment of the Pumpkin Patch coral from Greg Carroll. Both parties had decided on their marketing names about the same time that they discovered that both corals came from the same original exported colony. That colony was broken into two pieces and Fragfarmers had recieved one piece just prior to Greg Carroll recieving the second piece. We are distributing the Greg Carrol lineage as the Limited Edition Pumpkin Patch. The Eric (old Fragfarmers) lineage is distributed as the Miami Hurricane.
This amazing coral appears to prefer moderate to low light levels. It can be slightly difficult to transfer between systems and adapt it to strong light. It has shown growth in captivity and appears to be a new class of Chalice or Echinophyllia corals that should do incredibly well within the exotic captive market.
Steve Tyree is maintaining a seed section of the Miami Hurricane Echinophyllia for Reeffarmers.com in an 130 gallon naturally filtered Bi-Zonal Gyre Reef Aquarium. In Steve's captive reef the coral is positioned to receive weak light under a 400 watt 20,000 K Radium Metal Halide. The coral appears to develop its most intense coloration under moderate illumination. This helps to maintain the brilliant orange corallite center pigments. The price is currently $125 per small sized fragment with one corallite mouth.
Please note Reeffarmers is no longer taking new reservations for new corals. The current economic conditions are not supportive for reservations that extend for a few years into the future. After this first edition is distributed, we will sell future captive produced fragments on either our Buy It Now page or via another silent auction. We will still list exotic corals as Limited Editions and will continue to build web pages for them.
