The Pastel Watermelon Echinophyllia Coral develops a pastel pink colored surface that can also develop bluish pigments. It also contains the bright green growth edge that normal watermelon Echinophyllia corals develop. Corallites eyes are bright green, while a unique outer ring blue pigment pattern appears around the green corallite center. It appears that under moderate to intense light the surface of the Pastel Watermelon develops a more pastel pink surface pigmentation (see image above). Under moderate to weak light levels the coral develops a more pastel blue surface pigmentation (see image below). Corallites can also develop a yellow pigmentation. The Pastel Watermelon coral was originally acquired by Kenny Hsi (pookstreet@yahoo.com). He found this coral within a Southern California Reef Shop in early 2006. Kenny has the parent colony and has distributed a seed colony to Reeffarmers. He also distributed a few fragments of this coral at Reef-A-Palooza 2008 where they were selling for $150 per fragment. Steve Tyree is maintaining a seed section of the Pastel Watermelon for Reeffarmers.com in an 225 gallon naturally filtered Quad-Zonal Reef Aquarium. In Steve's captive reef the coral is positioned to receive moderate to strong light under a 400 watt 20,000 K Radium Metal Halide. It appears that this coral will develop its brightest pink coloration under moderate to strong lighting. Please note - Reeffarmers retired this coral in August 2010. We lost the seed and do not currently grow this coral.

A top view of the Kenny Hsi Pastel Watermelon parent colony. In this color morph the corallite eyes have developed a bright
yellow pigmentation. Also note that the upper right area is pinkish while the area just below the upper right is more bluish.
That bluish area was being partially shaded.
