Strawberry Shortcake Favia
Favia rosaria

Favia rosaria Strawberry Shortcake Favia Original Diamonds in the Reef Parent Colony.
This appears to be the pigmentation pattern and tissue retraction that occurs
when the coral is maintained within moderate to strong light levels.

This Favia originally had an incredible pigmentation pattern that can be seen in the above image. The center of the corals large irregular sized corallites were colored with a cream pink pigmentation. Outside of this cream color a gradient of pigments occurred to a darker red color. The coralite ridges were pigmented reddish brown. The leading growth edge of the coral also developed a bright green rim pigmentation. We currently believe that this is the pigments the coral develops under moderate to strong light levels.

The Strawberry Shortcake Favia was originally acquired by Clint and Krista Conway of Diamonds in the Reef. Clint distributed one fragment of the coral before selling the entire colony to a private collector. That private collector is not a fragment distributor.

Reeffarmers acquired a seed section of this coral from the Southern California reef aquarists who acquired the one distributed fragment. That reef aquarist had grown two seed sections of the coral from the two Favia polyps distributed from Diamonds in the Reef before they sold the original colony. The seed sections were grown and maintained under low light levels where the dark red pigments appeared to develop more intensely. We believe that the lighter pink corallite centers and green leading edges will develop if fragments of this coral are maintained in moderate to strong light levels. The growth of the seed sections of this coral demonstrate that the coral can grow and thrive within a captive reef systems.

Steve Tyree is maintaining a single large polyps of the Strawberry Shortcake Favia for Reeffarmers.com in his 225 gallon naturally filtered Quad-Zonal Reef Aquarium. In Steve's captive reef the coral is positioned to receive low to moderate light under a 400 watt 14,000 K Metal Halide. The price is currently $60 per single large corallite.

Please note Reeffarmers is no longer taking new reservations for new corals. The current economic conditions are not supportive for reservations that extend for a few years into the future. After this first edition is distributed, we will sell future captive produced fragments on either our Buy It Now page or via another silent auction. We will still list exotic corals as Limited Editions and will continue to build web pages for them.

Strawberry Shortcake Favia rosaria seed colony maintained by an anonymous Southern California
collector in low light. When maintained in low light the red pigment appears to dominate.
The coral also appears to expand its tissue in an attempt to collect more light.
