In this colony image the coral has retracted its feeding and defensive tentacles.
Valleys contain a mix of green and yellow pigments with a pink purple outer edge.
Ridges are crossed with short bright green stripes. Blue pigments can also develop on ridges.

The aMAZing race Platygyra is one of the most colorful Platygyra corals that we have ever seen in captivity. We made this coral a new Limited Edition on July 4th 2011. Corallite valleys were originally green to yellow with a band of pink purple that occurs between the upper ridge and lower valley areas. Upper ridges are lined with short green perpendicular stripes. Blue pigments can develop on the ridges between green stripes. This coral has been growing well in captivity and has been producing fragments relatively easy. When the coral extends its polyps during the daytime photoperiod, valleys appear orange with green centers. Ridges have retained their brilliant perpindicular green stripes.

The aMAZing race Platygyra was discovered and acquired by Nick at Addicting Corals. He acquired the coral in December 2010. The name aMAZing race was coined by Nick to emphasize that this was a maze brain type coral. Nick believes the coral prefers low light and it will lose color in bright light.

Steve Tyree is maintaining a seed section of this coral for Reeffarmers.com in a 130 gallon Raceway Gyre BiZonal system. This system is naturally filtered with a semi-cryptic zone and a reef flat exposed zone. In Steve's captive reef the coral is positioned to receive low to weak light levels from a 400 watt 20,000 K Radium metal halide. The first edition fragment of this coral was sold as a Buy It Now. Introductory price based on past sales was set at $100 per small fragment with 2 to 3 eyes (not valleys). Price for medium sized fragments with 4-6 eyes (not valleys) is $150. If demand is greater then supply this price may rise until more are grown.

The Addicting Corals seed was very healthy and had encrusted down over cut edges.
When tentacles extend during the day the valleys come alive with color.
