They were some very exotic Pink and Blue colored Acropora colonies
occasionally imported from Fiji during the spring of 2003. These coral colonies
had thick upright branches that were in plate-like arrangements. Unfortunately
these corals did not ship very well. They had a tendancy to die from shipping
stress within the first few weeks in captivity. Their initial coloration was brilliant
pink and blue hues. What typically happened was that a few branches
were salvaged from the damaged colonies. These branches had a tendancy
to quickly lose their brilliant coloration and fade to brown. Reeffarmers.com
kept one of these salvaged branches which eventually turned brown and remained
brown for 3 to 5 months. The fragment did survive long term and then a brilliant
pink coloration began to redevelop. The coral also began to grow and encrust
within its base area. The polyps on the coral have developed a pink coloration to
their tentacles. The very center of the polyp however is colored green. This gives
this coral a unique multicolored polyp which can be seen in the image below.
There are also traces of the corals original blue coloration seen in various parts
of the coral colony. This particular coral was another one of those corals that every
visitor to our facility wanted to get a fragment of. So we initially list it with its first 6
monthly reservations already taken. The coral has shown a slow growth rate to
date. We still see occasional pink and blue Acropora microclados colonies imported
from Fiji, but they all show heavy signs of stress. Steve Tyree is maintaining this
coral for reeffarmers.com in one of his 125 gallon naturally filtered Tri-Zonal EG
Reef Aquariums. In Steve's captive reef the coral is positoned at about 16 inches
from a 400 watt 20,000 K Radium Metal Halide. The coloration of the coral is easily
maintained within this reef. Water current is moderate to strong. Price is currently
$80 per small sized fragment. Note - In Late February 2004 Reeffarmers.com managed to
acquire two new small colonies of Acropora microclados from Fiji. They are very healthy
and we have now decided to farm this coral at a monthly rate starting in July 2004. The
monthly limited edition reservation schedules can be found below.
Please note effective July 2009 we have changed the
harvesting and reservation schedule to bimonthly. This better matches the corals
long term growth rate in captivity.
