The Acropora navini is a new species recently described by Veron. Images
can be found in Corals of the World Volume 1 Page 431. Our A. navini
has the exact branching and corallite forms shown in images 6 and 7.
The color of our coral is solid turquoise green with very bright blue
corallite ends. The blue color is easy to keep and is getting more intense
in captivity. This coral was imported from Bali, Indonesia. Corals from Bali
typically keep their pigments fairly easily. Verons distribution map for this
new species shows the coral has been found in Eastern Indonesia and in
Papua New Guinea. Bali is located in Central Indonesia and is right near the
edge of the species known distribution range. This coral species generally
appears as a hybridization between a tortuosa species and an echinata.
It has a very interesting corallite form and branching pattern. Reeffarmers has
acquired two small parent colonies of this Limited Edition coral species.
Steve Tyree is maintaining this coral for reeffarmers.com in one
of his 125 gallon naturally filtered Tri-Zonal EG Reef Aquariums. In Steve's
captive reef the coral is positoned at about 19 inches from a 400 watt 20,000
K Radium Metal Halide that was about 7 months old in November 2003. The
coral appears to develop larger Blue colored areas under moderate to intense
lighting. It may do fine under low lighting but will develop a turquoise color
with blue corallite edges. Water current is moderate. Price is currently $60
per small sized fragment. See our Buy It Now page for availability.
