The Area 51 Chalice is an exotically colored and shaped Echinophyllia coral. The surface of the coral has large verrucae or pointed protrusions. These protrusions are covered with bright green pigments. The green color contrasts with the base of the coral which is dark bluish green. Corallite mouths are bright yellow orange in coloration. The surface of the coral can also contain speckles or grains of orange pigments (see closeup image below). The leading growth edge of the coral can also develop green and orangish pigment patterns. The original Area 51 coral colony was acquired by Joe Goldberg in Las Vegas back in 2006. Joe was setting up a new 1,000 gallon reef and this coral was included within a tranship of corals. The coral appears to develop its best coloration in shaded or weak light levels. Joe thinks the glowing green ridges and orange speckles develop intensely once the coral acclimates. It can be slightly difficult to acclimate this coral to different reef systems. It seems that acclimation can take a couple of months before the coral fully recovers. As this coral adapts to captivity over the years it should be able to acclimate to different reef systems more easily. Steve Tyree is maintaining a seed section of this coral for Reeffarmers.com in an 125 gallon naturally filtered TriZonal system. This system is naturally filtered with a cryptic zone, semi-exposed zone and a reef flat exposed zone. In Steve's captive reef the coral is positioned to receive weak light levels from a 400 watt 20,000 K Radium metal halide. The coral appears to develop its best combination of colors when exposed to weak light levels. Price is currently $95 per small fragment containing one corallite. The bimonthly limited edition reservation schedules can be found below.
