During 2009 we have seen some very exotic Acropora species corals exported from Australia. Among these coral exports there has been a collection of Acropora horrida corals that appear to be true horridas. At least they appear very similar to Verons image found in Corals of the World volume 1 page 267 image 5. Some of these corals develop some very intense pigmentation when maintained within captivity. The Blue Lightning Horrida develops a very bright solid blue purple pigmentation (see image above). Its polyps also can turn bright whitish in color (see image below). The Blue Lightning Horrida is another incredible coral found by Dan and Tina of Wet Thumb Frags. This coral originated from Australia and was purchased from an importer located within the Greater Los Angeles area. Originally the coral was not colored as blue purple and the polyps were not bright white. These amazing pigments develop within 4 to 6 weeks if the coral is maintained under Strong to Moderate 20,000 K metal halide lighting. Steve Tyree is maintaining a seed section of this coral for Reeffarmers.com in an 85 gallon naturally filtered BiZonal system. This system is naturally filtered with a semi-cryptic zone and a reef flat exposed zone. In Steve's captive reef the coral is positioned to receive strong to moderate light levels from a 400 watt 20,000 K Radium metal halide. The price of this coral per small fragment consisting of a single branch is $70. The quarterly limited edition reservation schedules can be found below.
