Soon after we distributed that coral, Miguel sold his interest in FraggleReef and we lost our evaluation seed. Frank has maintained the coral for two years now and a quick google search in early October 2010 showed no one with an active online image of the coral. So here was a colorful Micromussa that had fully adapted to captivity. And it apparently had not been available on the captive market for some time. A perfect candidate for a Limited Edition Micromussa stony coral.
The Blue Meanie Micromussa has bright green corallite centers. The inner corallite ridge is colored dark red. This pigment changes to a violet blue in the outer corallite ridge area. We believe that Miguel called it the Blue Meanie because the blue area was larger and the inner dark red area was smaller. So the Meanie part must be the inner dark red. See corallite closeup image below. While Frank McDonald adapted this coral fully to captivity he was feeding it frozen Mysis shrimp. The dark red pigment seems to have increased its density.
Steve Tyree is maintaining a seed section of this coral for Reeffarmers.com in a 130 gallon Raceway Gyre BiZonal system. This system is naturally filtered with a semi-cryptic zone and a reef flat exposed zone. In Steve's captive reef the coral is positioned to receive moderate to weak light levels from a 400 watt 20,000 K Radium metal halide. The price of this coral per small fragment consisting of a single polyp will be determined by the first edition auction below.
