This extremelly rare Acropora Stony Coral is being farmed by Steve
Tyree of Dynamic Ecomorphology (DE). Steve is maintaining the coral
within a 235 gallon naturally filtered Quad-Zonal EG Reef Aquarium. This
is the first living clathrata table that Steve has ever seen imported for
the hobby. It was exported from Fiji. This is a super rare one-of-a-kind
table Acropora. It develops horizonal radiating branches and tends to not
form vertical branches. Branches can also fuse together. This gives the
table a very unique growth form. This particular table has a fully encrusted
thick base column with a 7 inch diameter tabular plate. The plate is very
thin and flat due to the horizontal travelling branches. In addition to its exotic
form this coral has a very unique coloration pattern that Steve has never
seen in an Acropora. The branch stems are solid pinkish blue colored
while the corallites are brown. This pink coloration is becomming more
intense in captivity. Images of this specific species and morph in nature
can be found within Corals of the World by Veron. Volume 1. Page 292
image 3 and page 293 image 5. In Steve's captive reef the coral is
positoned at about 14 inches below a 400 watt 20,000 K Radium Metal
Halide. Water current is strong. Steve may be the only Reef Farmer in
the world currently producing pink branched Acropora clathrata fragments.
ReefFarmers.com is allowed to distribute 2 farmed fragment of this coral
per month. Price is currently $100 per medium sized fragment. The
monthly limited edition reservation schedule can be found below. Please
Note - Starting in April of 2003 there will only be one fragment available
per month. This unique species of Acropora coral has turned out to be
difficult to fragment. It has a very strong and brittle skeleton. If its captive
growth rate increases we may go back to 2 per month during the months
in 2003 that are now limited to 1 fragment.
Acropora clathrata Colony from Front
CORAL RETIRED February 2005. Reeffarmers.com decided to retire
the Limited Edition coral Acropora clathrata during February of
2005. This was done for primarily one reason. The coral was difficult to keep
in the long term. We now suspect that this coral requires extreme water current
and extreme light levels. We currently do not have a reef setup within our facility
that develops extreme currents and light levels. We are however setting up a new
350 gallon Zonal Reef Pond and we may develop extreme conditions on the exposed zone,
but have not made a firm descision as of yet. We no longer maintain a living section
of this coral within our facility. By retiring this coral we hope to discourage others
from assuming that this morph of the Acropora clathrata is a coral that could be
maintained within captive systems easily. There were a total of about 21 fragments
that did get distributed over the past 2 years. If anyone who recieved a
Limited Edition fragment of this coral wants to futhur distribute this
interesting but difficult coral, please send us your email or web site link.
Obviously you would need to figure out the long term captive issues with
this particular species. We will add your email or web link to the Limited
Edition History listed below. Reeffarmers.com will not be growing any
fragments of this coral. Reeffarmers.com does not have any current plans to
reinstate the Limited Edition distribution of this coral in the future.
