The Cyphastrea genus corals have turned out to contain some very exotic and interesting color morphs. This new Minefield Cyphastrea is a fine example of that. The base pigmentation is a solid steel blue. Corallite mouths are bright blue while corallite septa ridges are bright white blue. Corallites also contain some green pigment patterns. The density of corallites is low and they are spread out over the surface of this encrusting species. Reeffarmers acquired a seed fragment of this coral from Matt Juner of Reefready.net. Matt originally acquired his parent colony from Rich (Sandollar). We do not know where the original coral was exported from. This Cyphastrea is somewhat similar to the Limited Edition Purple Green Eyes Cyphastrea, however the Minefield Cyphastrea does not have large knobby corallites. Its corallites are smaller and more spread out. The polyps on the minefield are also smaller in size. This gives the Minefield Cyphastrea a very unique appearance and explains why Matt called it the Minefield Cyphastrea. The steel blue base pigmentation maintains its intense coloration even under low to moderate light levels. Reeffarmers has identified this Minefield Cyphastrea as a Cyphastrea microphthalma species because it contains 10 primary and prominant septa in the corallites. See closeup image below. Steve Tyree is maintaining a farmed section of this coral for Reeffarmers.com in one of his 125 gallon naturally filtered Tri-Zonal Reef Aquariums. In Steve's captive reef the coral is positoned to recieve weak light under a 400 watt 20,000 K Radium Metal Halide. Limited Edition Reservation price is currently $95 per small sized fragment. The quarterly limited edition reservation schedules can be found below.
