In early 2004 the owner of Jeff's Exotic Fish sent Bill Schroer (former owner
of Piece of the Reef) to Tonga to find some rare and exotic fish. Bill had
previously learned his collecting techniques in Ponape Micronesia where he
collected some very exotic fish and corals. Bill informed Reeffarmers.com that
he had found some very exotic stonies and we should check them out. We found
an amazing solid red Echinophyllia aspera colony at Jeffs. It had survived the
trip from Tonga very well. The red pigmentation is developed from a fluorescing
pigment within the coral. Reeffarmers.com tested this corals fluorescence ability
and discovered that this coral should fluoresce very well in just about every
reef tank. The image above is of a third to fourth generational fragment of the
original Red Chalice coral.
Steve Tyree is maintaining this coral for reeffarmers.com in one
of his 125 gallon naturally filtered Tri-Zonal EG Reef Aquariums. In Steve's
captive reef the coral is positoned at about 20 inches from a 400 watt 20,000
K Radium Metal Halide. The coloration of the coral is easily maintained
within this reef. Water current is moderate. Price is currently $60 per small
sized fragment. The monthly limited edition reservation schedules
can be found below. Please note effective January 2007 we have changed this
corals harvesting and reservation rate to bimonthly. This better matches the
corals long term growth rate in captivity. Please note this LE coral was retired in June 2008 due to a lack of
reservations and also because we did not have the seed colony in house any more.
