This Echinopora lamellosa is a plating and whorling stony coral that
can develop a brilliant blue coloration. The captive grown fragments we
are distributing are being grown by Steve Tyree in one of his 125 gallon
all natural Tri-Zonal EG Reefs. The lineage of the colony Steve is farming
can actually be traced back to the first Echinopora lamellosa Steve
maintained within his Berlin reef aquarium way back in 1996. The very
first colony was transhipped from Fiji and may have been the
very first Echinopora lamellosa that was successfully exported from Fiji.
At that time (early 1996) Steve was the number one stony coral transhipper
within the US. He was personally examining all stony corals exported from
Fiji through the only importer at that time. When this first Echinopora
lamellosa coral was unbagged at the Los Angeles import facility, it was
severly stressed. The coral was quickly transported to a 5 gallon bucket
with new water and transported to Steve's berlin reef. Initially it was
only colored brown with no colorful coral pigmentation. Within the first month
the coral fully recovered and developed an amazing blue pigmentation.
Steve noticed that the shade of blue seemed to be slightly different every
day. Fragments of that initial colony were distributed to reef aquarists around
the country. The reef aquarists Cameron Azad acquired one of these
fragments which he grew into a very large colony. This entire colony was
purchased by Bill Schroer of the old retail store Piece of the Reef. A fragment
of that colony was distributed to Tracy Gray. Tracy has in turn distributed
a fragment back to Steve Tyree to place within one of his Tri-Zonal EG
aquariums. Steve is now growing fragments from this Tracy Gray parent.
This Echinopora lamellosa prefers moderate to weak current and will become
more blue under weak lighting. Aquarists that place this coral under strong
illumination have found that it loses its blue color and it becomes tan colored.
This coral can also grow scroll forms and under special circumstances even
tubular branches. This stony coral has been maintained within captive reef
systems within the US since 1996. There are quite a few aquarists that currently
have this coral and are farming it, but if you want to acquire one that is very
blue and from the original reef aquarist who worked hard to acclimate the first
one to captivity, you can acquire one of the fragments we are distributing.
ReefFarmers.com is allowed to distribute 2 farmed fragment of this coral per
month. Price is currently $50 per small sized fragment. The monthly limited
edition reservation schedule can be found below. Please note - we have gotten
way behind on our shipping and harvesting schedule for the Blue Chalice. Because
of this we have rescheduled reservations starting with February 2006 to a monthly
harvesting and reservation schedule. We should have done this a year before since
at that time we only had a single seed growout section of the coral. When we
initially scheduled harvesting 2 fragments per month we had 2 large seed sections
of the coral. Sorry about the late reschedule. The new monthly harvesting rate
better matches the corals long term growth rate in captivity.
