The species Acropora insignis is characterized by having white colored
branches with corallites that have contrasting colors. Steve Tyree found this
particular specimen at an importers facility in Los Angeles. The coral was
hidden within a large coral shipment from Fiji. At first glance the coral was
not spectacular, but its uniqueness was obvious to Steve. Under low light
conditions the coral does develop whitish or creamish colored branch stems.
The original coral had purple tips with brown corallites and bushy brown
polyps. Under weak light conditions (175 watt halides or less) that is the
color that the coral normally has. Within the moderate to strongly lighted
reef tanks at Reeffarmers.com the coral developed intense purple branch
tips with aqua blue colored stems. The polyps also developed a whitish
blue color and remain partially extended during the day. The corals
coloration is spectacular. This coral is being farmed by Steve Tyree and it
is located within one of his 125 gallon naturally filtered Tri-Zonal EG
reefs. The Acropora insignis develops branching bush or cushion-
like shaped colonies. Please note this coral was retired on
December 2008 due to the loss of the seed.
