This Oxypora lacera has an exotic coloration pattern. The surface of the
coral is colored bright blue while the calice polyp areas are bright pink.
This coral however is a low light coral and the exotic pigments are best
developed within low light areas (175 watt halide or less). The coral was
actually hand delivered to Reeffarmers.com by the Ponape collector and
exporter Bill Schroer. When we first recieved the tiny colony it was brownish
grey with pink calice areas. Bill informed us that it was recieving low light
where it was collected. He also stated that the surface of the coral was
actually colored blue when first collected. We mounted the tiny colony to
a rock and positioned it where it only recieved low light levels. Just as
Bill had predicted, the surface of the coral gradually turned bright blue,
while the calice areas remained pink. Reeffarmers.com thanks Bill Schroer
for delivering this incredible coral. The coral has been called the 'Dessert
Plate Coral', because one of reeffarmers.com regular customers said
when first seeing it "It Looks Good Enough to Eat !". Now we dont recommend
anyone actually eat this coral, but it does look like a creamy bluish dessert
with bright pink objects on it. The coral is being farmed by Steve
Tyree and it is located within one of his 125 gallon naturally filtered
Tri-Zonal EG reefs. This Oxypora lacera develops thick plating growths as well
as massive growth forms. ReefFarmers.com is allowed to distribute 1
farmed fragment of this coral per month. Price is currently $80 per medium
sized fragment. The monthly limited edition reservation schedule can be
found below. The reeffarmer Tracy Gray has been promised the very first
fragment produced from this coral ! Please note effective December 2008 we
have changed this corals harvesting and reservation rate to bimonthly. This
better matches the corals long term growth rate in captivity.
