Michael Bae Original Pink Lemonade Colony
Note - We retired this coral in the summer of 2006 primarily because it color patterns
morphed while in captivity and it no longer appears even remotely close to the images
here. Apparently that has been a problem with some Micromussa corals. We hope to acquire
some Micromussa in the future that retain their incredible pigmentation.
This is the second Micromussa coral that Reeffarmers has decided to grow and distribute.
The coral is called Pink Lemonade and it is being maintained within our 90 gallon Naturally
Filtered Bi-Zonal reef. This reef is dedicated to Micromussa corals. All of the Micromussa
corals we will be farming will be acquired as second or third generation cuttings.
We acquired cuttings of the Pink Lemonade from
Michael Bae of Los Angeles California.
Michael also maintains a sellers page on
www.frags.org. We believe
this is a Micromussa amakusensis species. The colony was acquired by Michael in the Late
Spring of 2005.
This particular Micromussa has a pink corallite center coloration that is surrounded by a thick
ring of yellow. This yellow ring is surrounded by another thick ring that is pink colored. The
thick pink ring is edged with a yellow trim. The contrasting rings of color give this tiny
Micromussa coral a spectacular pigment coloration pattern. The combination of pink and yellow
are why the coral has been called Pink Lemonade by Michael Bae.
Reef Aquarists who are new to Micromussa corals need to be aware of their special
requirements. They will require target feedings to achieve phenomenal growth rates. In
addition to this, cutting out whole individual polyps that are about the size of a pea takes
a bit of skill. A diamond dust saw blade and a dremel are a must for propagating polyps.
Reeffarmers customers also need to be aware that what you get as a tiny fragment of
Micromussa consists of a single pea sized corallite or polyp. When expanded they can
achieve a size slightly larger then a dime. If target fed they can however grow rapidly and
new tiny polyps will develop along the edge of the primary polyp. Due to their
initial small nature and relatively high price range, many reef aquarist have setup
special frag tanks and special systems just to hold these corals.
Reeffarmers is maintaining a farmed seed colony in our 90 gallon naturally filtered
Bi-Zonal Reef Aquarium. This aquarium has been running since early 2004 and was recently
upgraded and improved with lessons learned during its first year and a half of operation.
This captive reef is illuminated with 4-55 watt power compact lights. The coral is
currently recieving weak light levels. Limited Edition Reservation price is
currently $125 per tiny pea sized polyp. The monthly limited edition reservation schedules
can be found below. We are still experimenting with Micromussa corals
and we have not yet achieved a growth rate to sustain a monthly harvest schedule. Due to
this we have changed the reservation schedule to bimonthly.
