This Acropora tenuis was originally exported from Fiji back in 2003.
There were a few various A. tenuis corals exported from Fiji and they
contained a variety of colorations. This particular specimen originally
had very deep blue pigmented branch tips. When Steve Tyree first saw the
coral it reminded him of a couple of corals he seen in the mid to late 1990's
that developed intense blue pigments in captivity. One was farmed and
distributed by Steve and the other was distributed by the reeffarmer Steve
Noel. That one was called the Steve Noel Tenuis. This newer coral specimen has
also developed the intense blue pigments that the previous two corals developed.
The blue was so intense that Steve called it a Super Blue pigmentation. If you wanted
a blue colored coral in your reef, this was the coral you got. The blue pigment can
even be developed under weak lighting, but it gets more intense under moderate to
strong lighting. Under intense lighting the branch stems become cream colored. The
Acropora tenuis Super Blue develops branching bush or cushion-like shaped
colonies.
This coral is being farmed by Reeffarmers in our 8 foot raceway bizonal reef system.
There is an exposed zone with coral and a semi-cryptic zone with living sponge and
other cryptic animals. In the long run this coral has developed a growth form that is
between an echinata and a tenuis. A picture of a fragment produced from the seed that has
been maintained within captivity since 2003 appears below. The current list price for a
small fragment is $58.00.
