This incredible branching Montipora has three exotic attributes. First - it is known as the Lavender and Green Montipora and that is a very rare coloration combination. Second - the surface of the Montipora stellata has numerous ridges and bumps. Third - the large polyps are bright green in coloration with flower like markings in brighter green. So this coral is much more then a shaggy stick coral.
When this branching coral is placed in low to moderate light levels, the brown Symbiodinium pigment will dominate. On the surface, just the lavender blue ridges and green polyps will be visible above the brown. When placed in strong to moderate light levels, the brown from the Symbiodinium algae becomes less dominate. On the surface, there are lavender brown valleys with blue bumps and ridges prominant. The bright green polyps are also visibile. Montipora corals can be sensitive to sudden light changes, so caution should be exercised when using strong light levels.
Steve Tyree is maintaining a seed section of this coral for Reeffarmers.com in a 130 gallon Raceway Gyre BiZonal system. This system is naturally filtered with a semi-cryptic zone and a reef flat exposed zone. In Steve's captive reef the coral is positioned to receive moderate to strong light levels from a 400 watt 20,000 K Radium metal halide. The price of this coral per small fragment consisting of a single polyp will be determined by the first edition auction below.
