Deepwater Brain Reeffarmers Seed Colony Image. Circular corallites
have thick orange ridges. Rows of Bright Lime Green Pigment Spots Radiate Outward from the Corallite
Center. Corallite Center has Deep Blue/Purple Pigments.
This is a very unique and somewhat difficult coral to identify. We currently think it
is perhaps a Montastrea or Favia species coral. The corallites are very large with thick
ridges that can develop a base orange pigmentation. Corallite centers contain a large
circular inner area that develops a deep dark bluish pigmentation. Along the thick ridge
there are spots of lime green pigmentation that radiate outward in rows. The growth edge
of the coral colony can also form a solid lime green edge pigmentation. Reeffarmers
acquired our farming seed section of this coral from Clint and Krista Conway with
Diamonds in the Reef. They acquired the
coral from the online coral retailer Reefermadness. Chris Turnier with Reefermadness
personnally collected this coral from a Fijian Reef at a depth of 120 feet. That is why
the coral is called 'Deepwater' Brain. We have been exposing the coral to brighter light
levels and that has promoted the development of more intense pigmentation. We think the
coral will eventually become even more pigmented then shown in the above image. In Steve's
captive reef the coral is positoned to recieve moderate light under a 400 watt 20,000 K
Radium Metal Halide. Please note - This coral was retired in May 2009 due to the loss of
the seed as well as its slow growth rate and lack of demand.
