The main surface of this rare coral is very smooth. It has a cream coloration which combined with is very smooth surface gives the coral body a general appearance of icing on a cake. The corals polyps are an intense reddish coloration and they extend during the day. This polyp color contrasts sharply with a bluish cream body pigmentation. We acquired our seed fragments of this coral from Dave with Rare Imports, which is a Los Angeles based reef importing company. Reeffarmers purchased our seed fragments from Dave in late 2005. The coral was exported from the Tonga Islands. We believe that it is either a Montipora mollis or a Montipora orientalis. There is also a possibility that the Icing on the Cake coral may be similar to Porites densa, but with much smaller sized coralites (< 1mm). Steve Tyree is maintaining a farmed section of this coral for Reeffarmers.com in one of his 125 gallon naturally filtered Tri-Zonal Reef Aquariums. In Steve's captive reef the coral is positoned to recieve moderate light under a 400 watt 20,000 K Radium Metal Halide. The Auctioned Edition opening bid for each new auction is currently $135 per small sized fragment. The bimonthly auctioned edition auction schedules can be found below. Reeffarmers plans on producing bimonthly auctioned fragments of this coral. When we first posted this web page on November 15th 2005, no fragments had been distributed by Reeffarmers. Update December 2006 - Unfortunately this rare Icing on the Cake Montipora Auctioned Edition has become extinct in captivity as far as we know. This coral unfortunately slowly bleached and Reeffarmers has completely lost our seeds. We know of no surviving fragment. A few of the Montipora species unfortunately seem to have long term bleaching problems in captivity. This was one of those species.

No fragments of this coral will be traded on the side by Reeffarmers for Limited Edition Corals. We do reserve the right however to possibly trade a fragment of this coral to help acquire a new Auctioned Edition coral. When First Edition Reeffarmers Auctions occur, about 50 % of the auction price will go to the farmer that delivered this coral to the reeffarmers.com facility. We do this in gratitude to reef farmers who have chosen to sell their rare corals through the Reeffarmers Auctioned Edition (AE) distribution network. The Reeffarmers facility is closed to the public.
